What to Check Before You Delete Anything at Snapchat Storage

I was stuck with Snapchat storage and did not know where to begin. The word “storage” did not tell me whether the problem was my saved Memories or the space available on my phone. I wanted a clear answer before removing anything important.
If you are in the same position, start with that distinction. Snapchat Memories use cloud storage. The Snapchat app, its temporary files and photos saved to your camera roll use space on your phone. Each problem needs a different solution.
Check which storage is causing the problem
If Snapchat shows a warning about Memories or offers a storage plan, check your Memories usage. Open your profile, tap the Settings icon, then open My App → Memories → Cloud Storage.
If your phone says it is running out of space, check your device’s storage settings instead. A paid Memories plan will not clear temporary files from your phone.
You can have both problems at once, so read the warning carefully before deciding what to do.

How much Memories storage is free?
Snapchat provides up to 5 GB of complimentary Memories storage. If you have saved more than that, the app may offer a paid storage plan. Options include a 100 GB Memories plan, while Snapchat+ typically includes 250 GB. Snapchat+ Platinum includes 5 TB. The plans and prices shown in your app are the ones to check before subscribing.
You do not need to buy a plan simply because the Snapchat app takes up a lot of space on your phone. The plan increases room for Memories stored by Snapchat. It does not remove files from your device.
Will Snapchat delete Memories above the free limit?
Snapchat says it will not automatically delete your Memories because you do not upgrade. It also says no Memories will be archived before January 2027.
Starting then, Memories more than a year old that are not part of your oldest 5 GB may be archived. Archived Memories would remain stored and appear as thumbnails in the app, but opening, editing or sharing them would require a storage upgrade. Downloading your Memories would give you another way to access copies outside Snapchat.
Snapchat says affected users will receive notice in the app before a change applies to them. If you have not received a storage notice, do not assume another person’s warning applies to your account.
What if your phone is full?
Snapchat keeps temporary files, called cache, on your phone. Clearing the cache may free some device space. Snapchat says this does not delete your Memories, Snaps or Chats.
In Snapchat Settings, look for My Privacy & Data, then find Clear Cache. The exact path can differ between iPhone and Android. On some versions, you may need to open Clear Data before selecting Clear Cache. Make sure you select the cache option, not an option to erase other app data.
Clearing cache may only recover a small amount of space. Videos and photos saved to your camera roll take up space separately. Check that you have another safe copy before deleting any of those files.
Check your Memories backup first
Before logging out, changing phones or uninstalling Snapchat, confirm that your Memories backup has finished. Open Snapchat Settings, go to My App → Memories, and check that Backup Progress says Complete.
If you see Snaps Remaining or No Network Connection, the backup is not finished. Connect to a reliable network and let it complete before making changes to the app. Snapchat warns that Memories lost before they were successfully backed up may not be recoverable.
Your phone’s camera roll is separate. Snapchat does not automatically back up every photo and video in your camera roll to Memories. Check those files independently if they matter to you.
Keep a copy outside Snapchat
If you are concerned about access to your Memories, you can request a copy through Snapchat’s My Data export. Choose the option to export Memories and submit the request. Wait for Snapchat to prepare the download, then open it and check that the files you care about are present.
Submitting an export request is not the same as having a verified backup. Do not delete anything until you have downloaded the export and confirmed that you can open it.
Deleting a Memory is also different from clearing cache. Deleted Memories generally cannot be recovered, so deletion should not be your first response to a storage warning.
Frequently asked questions
Does clearing cache reduce my 5 GB Memories usage?
No. Cache uses space on your phone. The 5 GB limit concerns Memories stored by Snapchat.
Do I need Snapchat+ if my phone storage is full?
No. Snapchat+ increases Memories storage, not your phone’s capacity. Check your device storage and the app cache first.
Will my Memories disappear if I do not pay?
Snapchat says it will not automatically delete them because you do not upgrade. Its announced policy concerns archiving certain Memories starting in January 2027, with advance notice to affected users. Archiving is not the same as deletion.
What should I do first when I see a warning?
Check whether it refers to Memories or phone storage. Then confirm that Backup Progress says Complete before uninstalling Snapchat or deleting any saved content.
The bottom line
I know how confusing it feels to be stuck with a Snapchat storage problem. The safest first step is to identify which storage is affected. Check Memories usage for a cloud storage warning, and check your device for a phone storage warning. Whatever the cause, verify your backup before removing anything you cannot replace.
